Delicious (stylized del.icio.us ) is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing and finding web bookmarks. The site was founded by Joshua Schachter and Peter Gadjokov in 2003 and was acquired by Yahoo in 2005. By the end of 2008, the service claimed more than 5.3 million users and 180 million unique bookmark URLs. Yahoo sold Delicious to AVOS Systems in April 2011, and the site was relaunched in a "return to beta" state on September 27 of that year. In May 2014, AVOS sold the site to Science Inc. In January 2016, Delicious Media, a new alliance, reported that they had taken over the control of the service.
On June 1, 2017, Delicious was acquired by Pinboard, and the bookmarking service was discontinued on a Pinboard-based subscription service. Existing bookmarks are available because the site is in read-only mode.

Function
Delicious uses a non-hierarchical classification system in which users can mark their individual bookmarks with freely chosen index terms (resulting in some sort of folksonomy). The aggregate view of all bookmarks with given tags is available; for example, the URL http://delicious.com/tag/wiki displays all the latest links tagged "wiki". Its collective nature makes it possible to view bookmarks added by other users.
Delicious also allows users to group links with similar topics together to form "Stack", and include titles and descriptions for the Stack page. Stacks can be done collaboratively with other users, and can be followed and shared with other users. The stack was added in September 2011 and removed in July 2012.
Delicious has a "list" on the homepage and the "recent" page, which helps make the website a meme-transmitter and internet trend. Users can also browse the stack on the home page by navigating categories like Art & amp; Design, Education, and so on.
Delicious is one of the most popular social bookmarking services. Many features contribute to this, including simple website interfaces, human readable URL schemes, new domain names, simple REST-like APIs, and RSS feeds for web syndication.
Free Delicious Use. Site source code is not available, but users can download their own data via site APIs in XML or JSON format, or export them to the standard Netscape bookmark format.
All bookmarks posted to Delicious are publicly viewable by default, although users can mark certain bookmarks as private, and imported bookmarks are private by default. The public aspect is emphasized; this site is not focused on storing private bookmark collections ("not shared"). Fine linkrolls, tagrolls, network badges, RSS feeds, and daily site blog post features can be used to display bookmarks on the weblog.

History
The precursor for Delicious is Muxway, a blog link that has grown from a text file that Schachter retains to track links related to Memepool. In September 2003, Schachter released the first version of Delicious. In March 2005, he left his job to work in Delicious full-time, and in April 2005, he received about $ 2 million in funding from investors including Union Square Ventures and Amazon.com.
When Delicious was first launched, it was the first use of the term "tag" in the modern sense, and it was the first explicit opportunity where website users were given the ability to add their own tags to their bookmarks so they could more easily locate them later. This big break was not much noticed because most thought the app at that time was "cool" but obvious.
Yahoo acquired Delicious on December 9, 2005. Various guess shows sell for between US $ 15 million to US $ 30 million.
On December 16, 2010, an internal slide from a leaked Yahoo meeting, indicating that Delicious will be "revived" in the future, which seems to mean "shut down". Then Yahoo explains that they will sell Delicious instead of ending it. This news generates Delicious users looking for alternative sites. This advantageous pinboard, as well as a bookmarking site, sees a huge spike in traffic and activity on its site. Various other services like Google Bookmarks and Spabba also offer a bookmark migration tool to allow users to migrate and keep their bookmarks from Delicious.
On April 27, 2011, Delicious announced that the site was sold to Avos Systems, a company created by Chad Hurley and Steve Chen. Unknown members, Yahoo continues to operate the site until September 2011.
On September 26, 2011, Delicious unveiled a completely new version 3.0 design in beta. The redesign is a surprise for many users, with many features disabled, deleted or temporarily unavailable. AVOS Systems removes the Delicious Support Forums and have advised users that communication with Avos should be done via email. The reaction from the user is very negative.
On November 9, 2011, AVOS Systems announced that it has secured a link saver service, Trunk.ly. Trunk.ly offers to automatically save all the "user" liked links on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. This acquisition led to the launch of Twitter Connector on Delicious on March 2, 2012.
On May 8, 2014, Science, Inc. announced it has acquired the Delicious website from AVOS, without acquiring staff. Science, Inc. is an "investment company and technology advisor", which says it's meant to keep the site "largely as it is".
On January 11, 2016, the Delicious blog announces ownership has been transferred to a new company formed between Science and Domainersuite.
On June 1, 2017, Pinboard acquired Delicious. This service will close and become read-only on June 15, and users have been encouraged to subscribe to Pinboard services.
Delicious under Avos Systems
After being purchased by AVOS Systems on 27 April 2011, Delicious underwent a significant UI redesign and became more social.
On September 26, 2011, Delicious unveiled a completely new version 3.0 design in beta. Delicious adds a new feature called Stacks that lets users group multiple related links into a single page, and customize Stacks by adding featured titles, descriptions and images.
On December 13, 2011, Delicious resumed its work to redesign its site, including UI changes to link-saving pages and Stack pages. The new design, especially for Stacks pages, is similar to the design of other popular photo-sharing social websites at Pinterest.
On January 20, 2012, Delicious added more social features to its Stacks page, allowing users to collaborate in the same Stack, as Public Stack or Private stack among a group of users. Users can also comment on the stack and create the stack in response to the original stack. This new social feature is considered a good move against competitors like Pinterest who did not offer private boards at the time.
On March 2, 2012, Delicious continues its efforts to become more social, by providing a Twitter Connector that allows users to connect their Twitter account to their Delicious account. This new feature allows tweeted links to be automatically saved to a Delicious account.
On July 20, 2012, Delicious reversed his position in the Stacks feature. All Stacks created by members are converted to tags in early August 2012, without loss of member data. This is part in response to AVOS directives for Delicious and a portion of feedback from Delicious members, many of whom feel that Stacks is trying to mimic the feature of the visual bookmarking site, Pinterest.
Name
The domain name "del.icio.us" is a well-known example of domain hatching, an unusual combination of letters to form words or phrases.
In an interview, Schachter explains how he chose the name: "I registered the domain when I opened the registry, and a quick test showed me six letter suffixes that allowed me to produce the most words.In the initial discussion, a friend refers to finding links which is good as a 'eat cherry' and a jammed metaphor, I think. "
On September 6, 2007, Schachter announced the name of the website will change to "Delicious" when the site will be redesigned. The new design aired on July 31, 2008. In January 2016, changes to the website were announced, including moving back to "del.icio.us".
On April 24, 2016, Delicious switched back to "del.icio.us".
