Plot

The film opens with Louis "Louie" Zamperini flying as a bomber bomber of the United States Air Force B-24 Liberator, during the April 1943 bombing mission against Japan's Nauru island. The aircraft was badly damaged in battle, with a number of crew injured. The pilot, Phil, managed to get him to stop at the end of the runway suffering from an exploding tire.

The story goes back to Louie's childhood as an Italian-American young man in Torrance, California. Louie is a troublemaker, who steals, drinks and smokes, to the disappointment of her parents. He is often chosen by other children because it comes from ethnic Italians. One day, Louie is caught looking for a woman's dress from under the bench during a track meet. His brother Peter saw how quickly Louie escaped and decided to train her to become a runner. As he grew, Louie became more disciplined and also a long-distance runner, earning him the nickname "The Torrance Tornado". He qualified for the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Louie came in at number 8 and set a record for the last round in the 5,000 meter race.

Back in 1943, Louie, a surviving crew and several substitutes were sent to search and rescue missions with aircraft previously used for spare parts. During the mission, from two left plane engines, one fails, while the crew drops the remaining machine, and the plane crashes in the ocean. Louie, Mac and Phil survived and lived on two inflatable rafts. After three days, a search plane flew but they could not get his attention. They face storms and fend off shark attacks while living with rations, rainwater, birds and fish. On the 27th day, they got the attention of the Japanese aircraft, which bombarded and damaged the raft but lost them. Mac died 6 days later.

On the 47th day, Japanese sailors captured Louie and Phil. Now prisoners of war, Louie and Phil are taken to the Kwajalein Atoll where they are kept in a dungeon. Louie saw the names of nine US marines, who were held on the island, scratched into the wall. Louie later learned that they were beheaded. One day, the Japanese asked Louie and Phil to tell them about the E class bombers and the Norden nuclear bomb. Louie claimed they flew the D-class, and drew Philco's radio rendition. On the other hand, they are dragged out to take off their robes and kneel on the board. Thinking that this was their execution, both were surprised that they were rudely laundered to send them to mainland Japan. Upon arrival, the two are separated and sent to different POW camps.

Camp Louie ,? Mori, in Tokyo, is headed by a Japanese corporal, Mutsuhiro Watanabe, who treats him very cruelly, in part because of Louie's status as a former Olympic athlete and an American officer. Watanabe was very hard on Louie, often beat her. Louie was given a run from Watanabe's torture when two Japanese journalists gave her the opportunity to broadcast a message home saying that she was alive after they learned the US government classified it as KIA. When he refused to broadcast a second message with anti-American propaganda, he was sent back to the camp where Watanabe had each of the other inmates beat him to teach him respect.

After two years, Watanabe got promoted and left the camp. The camp was damaged when Tokyo was bombed by American troops. Louie and the other internees were forced to move to Naoetsu prison camp, where Louie finds, horrified, that Watanabe is responsible. The prisoners are now deployed to work load the coal barge. Louie, exhausted, stops during work, and Watanabe tells him to pick up a giant piece of wood and instruct the guard to shoot Louie if he drops it. Louie managed to lift and lift the wood even though it was completely worn out, and angered Watanabe by staring straight into his eyes; Watanabe started beating him cruelly.

At the end of the war, Louie and the other prisoners at the camp were released when the Americans occupied Japan. Meanwhile, Louie tries to find Watanabe at her residence but realizes that she has escaped but Louie sits down and stares at Watanabe's photo as a child standing with her father. Back home in America, Louie kissed the ground and hugged her family.

At the end of the film, there is a slideshow showing what happened after the war. Louis is married and has two children. Phil survived and finally married his lover. Mutsuhiro "The Bird" Watanabe has been hiding for several years and managed to avoid the charges despite being listed in the top 40 most wanted Japanese war criminals by General Douglas MacArthur. Louie fulfills her promise to dedicate her life to God; finally believing in Jesus Christ and forgiving the kidnappers during his war, meeting with many of them. However, Watanabe refused to meet Louie.

In January 1998, Louie got a chance to revisit her time as an Olympic athlete when she ran at the foot of the Olympic torch for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. She is four days shorter than her 81st birthday. Site for his relay feet not far from one of the POW camps where he was detained during the war. The closing title reveals that Louie Zamperini died on July 2, 2014, at the age of 97 years.

At Metacritic, the film has a score of 59 out of 100 based on 48 reviews, showing "mixed or average review". Viewers surveyed by CinemaScore gave this movie an average rating of "A-" on a scale A to F.

The SAG Nomination Committee gave him a standing ovation after the screening.

The score receives a mixed critical reaction. Callum Hofler of Entertainment Junkie states, "At its best, Unbroken is probably the most powerful and most uneasy Desplat emotional work since the Tree of Life or Harry Potter and the Death of the Hallows - Part 2, both from 2011. It comes as bold, ambitious, yet intimate and sentimental all the same.It can be an elegant and harmonious exploration of the determination, drive and human spirit. "He also criticized many components, claiming that, "In many cases, the main problem with this album is the lack of energy and vitality. There is a lot of time where music seems to be just sitting in place, having no great character development, motive or mindset." He gave the final scoring score of 6 out of 10 Jorn Tillnes from Soundtrack Geek praised the album, stating, "This score is pretty good. This is a very good year for Desplat. Godzilla and << i> The Monuments Men above the pile, but this is not far d i behind. "He concluded with," This is a turning point though for those who think Desplat is about the boring rhythm and bass motif. This may even make the haters respect him as a composer. "He scored 87.8 out of 100.

Controversy

Prior to the release of the film, some Japanese nationalists requested that the film and director be banned in their country, largely because of the inside of Hillenbrand's book, which is not depicted in the film, where he described "POW clubbed, burned, stabbed, or beaten to death, beheaded, killed during a medical experiment, or eaten alive in ritual act of cannibalism "by the Imperial Japanese Army. The petition on Change.org called for a ban on attracting more than 10,000 signatures. In response, this led to the Change.org petition by the Dutch Indonesian group The Indo Project voicing support for the film, as they see it as a reflection of what their family members in the former Dutch East Indies experienced in Japanese camps. Some famous Dutch Indos (including those who are not descendants of former prisoners of war), such as writer Adriaan van Dis, frontman Doe Maar Ernst Jansz, and actress Wieteke van Dort, signed a petition to support the film. Another petition about Change.org calls for the release of a movie in Japan, this time written in Japanese, collecting more than 1,200 signatures. The film was finally released in Japan on February 6, 2016 by an independent distributor of Bitters End on a much smaller scale than originally intended, while Toho-Towa, the regular distributor of Universal titles, has graduated on the release of the film.

The film received some criticism for neglecting Zamperini's fight against alcoholism and PTSD, as well as conversion of religion inspired by Billy Graham.
