Note from Original Children is a non-fiction book by James Baldwin. This was his first non-fiction book, published in 1955. This volume collected ten Baldwin essays, which previously appeared in magazines such as Harper's Magazine, Partisan, and > New Leaders . These essays mostly address the issue of race in America and Europe.

"Autobiographic Notes"
Although his father wanted him to be a preacher, Baldwin said he had always been a writer at heart. He tried to find his way as a Negro writer; although he was not European, American culture also got information from that culture - moreover he had to grapple with other black writers. Furthermore, Baldwin stressed the importance of his desire to be a good person and a writer.
Part One
"Novel Protests Everyone"
Baldwin blasphemes Harriet Beecher Stowe Uncle Tom's Cabin for being too sentimental, and for portraying a black slave praying to a white God to be cleansed and whitened. He went on to reject Richard Wright of the Native Son for portraying Bigger Thomas as an angry black man, seeing this as an example of the stigmatization categorization.
"Many Thousand Gone"
Baldwin offers sharp criticism from Richard Wright's Native Son, citing his main character, Bigger Thomas, as unrealistic, unsympathetic and stereotypical.
"Carmen Jones: The Dark is Light Enough"
Baldwin criticized Carmen Jones, the film adaptation of Carmen using a black cast. Baldwin is unhappy that the character does not show a connection to the black condition and sees it as a coincidence that the main character has a lighter skin.
Part Two
"The Harlem Ghetto"
Baldwin points out that the rent is very expensive in Harlem. In addition, despite black politicians, the President is white. In the black press, Baldwin notes that it emulates the white press, with scandalous spreads and so on. But the black Church seems to him to be a unique forum to spell black injustice. Finally, he contemplated antisemitism among blacks and came to the conclusion that hatred boils down to the Jews being white and stronger than the Negro.
"Trip to Atlanta"
Baldwin tells the story of The Melodeers, a group of jazz singers employed by the Progressive Party to sing in the Southern Churches. However, once in Atlanta, Georgia, they were used for canvassing until they refused to sing at all and were returned to their hometown. They are now enjoying success in New York City.
"Native Children Notes"
Baldwin's paint life memories of his time grow with his paranoid father who died of tuberculosis, and his early experience with Jim Crow's segregation style. Before the death of his father, Baldwin befriended a white teacher whose father was not approved. Then he worked in New Jersey and was often denied in separate places - Baldwin recalled when he threw half a cup full of water in a waitress at a restaurant only to realize his actions could have dire consequences. He goes on to say that blacks who participate in military service in the South are often tortured. Finally, he recounts the death of his father that occurred just before his mother gave birth to one of his sisters; his father's funeral was on his 19th birthday and the 1943 Harlem Riot. Third Section
"Encounter on Seine: Black Meets Brown"
Baldwin compared Black Americans to Blacks in France. While Africans in France have a history and a state to sustain, Black Americans do not - their history lies in the United States and is in the making.
"Identity Question"
Baldwin explained how the American students who lived in Paris were shocked when they arrived and wanted to go home.
"Same with Paris"
Baldwin recounts being arrested in Paris during the Christmas period of 1949, after an acquaintance had stolen a bed sheet from a hotel, which he had used. This essay emphasizes his cultural inability to know how to behave with the police.
"Strangers in the Village"
Baldwin looked back to his time in a village in Switzerland - how he was the first black person most noticed by other villagers. He went on to reflect that the blacks of the European colonies are still largely in Africa, while the United States is fully informed of blacks.

Literary meaning and criticism
Notes from a Original Boy are widely considered to be classics of the black autobiography genre. The Modern Library places it 19th in the list of 100 best nonfiction books of the 20th century.
