Train strife involving Mediacom

June 2015 train dispute with Granite Broadcasting

On June 1, 2015, Mediacom customers in three television markets served by Granite Broadcasting Corporation companies were not able to view these stations via Mediacom cable due to a dispute between Mediacom and Granite Broadcasting over the cost of a retransmission permit. The affected Granite Broadcasting stations include WEEK-TV in Peoria, Illinois, KBJR-TV in Superior, Wisconsin/Duluth, Minnesota, and WISE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana, all of which are the main affiliates of NBC. On June 11, 2015, Mediacom and Granite Broadcasting reached an agreement, thereby restoring the Granite station to the Mediacom cabling system. The deal came just in time for Game 5 of the 2015 Final Stanley Cup which aired on NBC two days later.

carriage dispute July 2015 with Media General

On July 14, 2015, Media General withdrew its station from the Mediacom cable system throughout the United States due to a transport dispute over the cost of a retransmission permit. This transport dispute sees Media General stations disappear from Mediacom formations in 14 television markets across the United States and even three Fox affiliates owned by Media General disappear from Mediacom customers in Hampton Roads, Virginia, Terre Haute, Indiana, and Topeka, Kansas shortly before the start of the 2015 All-Star Major League Baseball Game. On July 30, 2015, Mediacom and Media General reached a new agreement, thereby restoring Media General's station to Mediacom customers in the affected area.

Mediacom view on carriage disputes and retransmission

On July 7, 2015, Mediacom petitioned the Federal Communications Commission to limit or prevent the blackout of local broadcasting stations during transport disputes. According to Mediacom Rocco Commisso CEO, the FCC has often ignored concerns about retransmission approval and blackout of local television stations, especially in rural areas, where residents have a harder time receiving acceptable over-the-air signals. The Commisso proposal is for local broadcasters not to stop the cable carrier or satellite provider from station signaling at the end of the re-approval agreement if the station does not reach at least 90 percent of its local audience in its DMA either over-the-air or through its online stream. The Commission also notes the fact that retransmission consent costs twice every two or three years - something that has never happened in other industries.
