History
The connected five-story building and building was designed by Charles Luckman and Associates. Originally named First National Bank Tower , the building opened on 17 April 1972, and was officially devoted to 25 May 1972. At that time, the bank occupied the first 21 floors of the tower and all connected five-story buildings, known as Building Data Processing. The name was changed to First Interstate Tower in 1980-81, after the Western Bancorporation, the parent of First National Bank of Oregon, changed its name to First Interstate Bancorp. The current name was adopted after Wells Fargo purchased the First Interstate in 1996. Upon its opening in 1972, the Wells Fargo Center dwarfed all the high-rise developments that existed in downtown Portland. Public condemnation of the tower scale and the potential for new development to block the view of Mount Hood led to high restrictions on all new developments.
The public area underwent a major renovation in 2001, including the addition of retail space. Renovation was completed in 2002 at a cost of $ 35 million. Focusing on the lobby area, work includes adding views to the history of the bank. The center was the headquarters of Willamette Industries until 2003, when the company was bought by Weyerhaeuser. In November 2017, Starwood Capital Group purchased an adjacent tower and carriage from Wells Fargo.

The design of the building has been criticized for various architectural issues. Ivan Doig, writing about Portland for The New York Times in 1976, stated that the building was "large and slick and without trait".
Museum
The branch of the Wells Fargo History Museum is located in the lobby of the building. The museum exhibits include 1854 stagecoach, telegraph and mining equipment, and showcase the company's use of steamers along the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.
