Telelocator Alphanumeric Protocol (TAP) is an industry-standard protocol for sending short messages via landline modem to pager and/or SMS service providers, for subsequent transmissions to pagers and cell phones.

TAP, originally known as Motorola Page Entry (PET) was adopted in September 1988, by the Personal Communications Industry Association. TAP defines industry standards for sending alphanumeric messages to pagers.

TAP is also known as the IXO protocol. Initially, devices like IXO Devices are used to send Alfanumeric Pages using TAP. Later, Motorola will create a similar device called AlphaMate.
