Sejarah awal
The city of Louisville dates back to the start of the Welch Mine in 1877, the first coal mine in the area of ââBoulder and Weld district known as Northern Coalfield. The city is named after Louis Nawatny, a local landowner who arranges his land and names it for himself. The establishment came a few years later, in 1882.
Northern Coalfield proved very productive, and eventually about 30 different mines were operated within the boundaries of Louisville today, though not all at the same time. During peak production years (1907-09), twelve mines operate in Louisville, including the Acme Mine which two million tonnes of coal originates just below the city center. The presence of many independent mining companies in Louisville saves the city from a "corporate city", wholly owned and controlled by one mining company.
Coalfield's coal is sub-bituminous (low grade) and can not be transported remotely because of problems with self-combustion. Mining generally takes place in winter because it is a period that demands fuel for heating. During the summer the miners play in a local baseball league, with a field house called "Miners Field".
Many mythologies have appeared around the tunnel stories that link saloons throughout the city, but these have proven to be unfounded and undocumented. Conversely, during labor disputes, many residents found refuge in the basement to avoid bullets fired from mine complexes into the city. From 1910-14, Northern Colorado Coalfields was in the midst of a strike by the United Mine Workers and Rocky Mountain Fuel Company under working conditions, payments, and hours worked. When the miners came out at the Hecla Mine in northeastern Louisville, the company hired the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency to guard the mine complex. Machine guns and spotlights were placed in a tower on the Hecla property, and when the miners released their disappointment by firing their weapons into the compound, the detectives responded by returning their gunfire by randomly firing into the city.
Finally the remaining coal in Northern Coalfield became increasingly uneconomical for the mine, and the last coal mine operating in Louisville was closed in the 1950s.
