Gerard was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, the mother of a college instructor and salesperson. While studying at Little Rock High School for Boys, she was involved in acting. Gerard was employed as an industrial chemist, and in the early years he became a regional manager of a major chemical company headed by governor Winthrop Rockefeller. He then went to New York City where he studied drama during the day and drove a taxi at night. Gerard picked up a fee that showed a lively interest in the issue of unknown and idle actors. Before he leaves the taxi, he tells Gerard to report in a few days to the set of Love Story , which is being filmed at a location in New York. When Gerard arrived at the set of Love Story , he was hired as an add-on. Later that day, he was chosen for a "little" role, but his role was not included in the finished film.
Over the next few years, he performed most of his acting in television commercials, nearly 400, including the job as a spokesman for Ford Motor Company. After a small role in gay-themed films Some My Best Friends Are... 1971), and thriller Man on a Swing (1974), Gerard later gained an important role in the opera day soap The Doctors for two years. Gerard also formed his own production company in partnership with the author-producer, co-authored the scenario called Hooch (1977) and filmed it as a starred vehicle for himself. According to the program, he has struggled with his weight for 40 years, losing weight just to get it back. At the time of program production, his weight has increased to over 350 pounds (160 kg), and he has many life-threatening health problems including severe problems with type 2 diabetes. Within five days of surgery, he lost 20 pounds (9.1 kg) in three months he has lost  £ 80 (36 kg), and within ten months he lost a total of  £ 145 (66 kg).
Gerard and his colleague Buck Rogers Erin Gray reunited in 2007 for the Nuclear Hurricane TV movie, and also returned to the Buck Rogers universe by playing the old man the character in the inaugural episode of the internet video series James Cawley Buck Rogers Begins in 2009.
Gerard guested as Admiral Jack Sheehan in "Kitumba", episode 1 January 2014 from the Star Trek fan series: Stage II .
In 2015, Gerard voiced Megatronus in Transformers: Robots in Disguise .
