In the context of the World Wide Web, a bookmark is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that is stored for retrieval later in various storage formats. All modern web browsers include bookmarking features. Bookmark is called a favorites or Internet shortcut in Internet Explorer, and based on the browser's large market share, this term has been synonymous with bookmark since the first browser war. Bookmarks are usually accessed through menus in the user's web browser, and folders are typically used for organizations. In addition to bookmarking methods in most browsers, many external applications offer bookmark management.

Bookmarks have been entered in the browser since the Mosaic browser in 1993. The bookmark list is called Hotlists in Mosaic and earlier versions of Opera; this term has faded from general use. Other early web browsers like ViolaWWW and Cello also have bookmark features.

With the advent of social bookmarking, shared bookmarks have become a means for users who share the same interests to collect web resources, or store their bookmarks in such a way that they are not tied to a single computer or browser. The web-based bookmark service lets users store bookmarks on remote web servers, accessible from anywhere.

The new browser has expanded the "bookmark" feature to include variations on the concept of saved links. Mozilla Firefox introduced a direct bookmark in 2004, which resembles a standard bookmark but contains a list of links to the latest articles provided by news sites or weblogs, which are updated regularly via RSS feeds. "Bookmarklet" is a JavaScript program that is stored as a clickable bookmark to perform the function.

Each browser has a built-in tool for managing bookmark lists. The list storage method varies, depending on the browser, version, and operating system it is running.

Netscape from the store stores bookmarks in a single HTML-code file bookmarks.html . This approach allows the publication and cataloging of categorized and identifiable catalogs, and works across platforms. The bookmark name does not have to be unique. Editing this file outside of the original browser requires HTML editing.

Firefox 3 stores bookmarks, history, cookies, and preferences in secure transactional database format (SQLite).

The "Internet Explorer" favorites ("Internet Shortcuts") are stored as individual files named after the original link, and ".URL" filename extensions, such as "Home.URL" pages collected in a directory named "Favorites" that may have subdirectories. The name of the bookmark must be unique inside the folder. Each file contains both the original URL and the Microsoft-specific metadata. The browser has various capabilities for importing and exporting bookmarks to favorites, and vice versa.

Bookmarklet

Bookmarklet is a JavaScript program stored as a bookmark. The term is a portmanteau of the words bookmark and applet . Bookmarklet is possible because the JavaScript URI scheme allows JavaScript programs to be stored as URIs, which can be stored in bookmarks. Bookmarklets have access to the current page, which they can check and change. As such, they can be a simple "one click" tool that adds functionality to the browser. Bookmarklets are usually installed by navigating to a web page linked to a JavaScript URI, right-clicking links, and clicking bookmark options.

Web developer Steve Kangas got the idea from the Netscape JavaScript Guide, and coined the term bookmarklet in 1998. Brendan Eich, the inventor of JavaScript, explains the bookmarklet as follows:

They are deliberate features in this case: I found javascript: URL along with JavaScript in 1995, and intends that javascript: URL can be used as another URL type, including being bookmark-can. Specifically, I make it possible to generate new documents by loading, eg javascript: 'hello, world' , but also (key for bookmarklet) to run arbitrary scripts against DOM current document, for example javascript: alert (document.links [0].href) . The difference is that the last URL type uses an expression that evaluates to an undefined type in JS. I added an empty carrier to JS before Netscape 2 was sent to make it easy to remove undefined values in the javascript: URL.

Direct bookmark

Active bookmarks are internet bookmarks supported by RSS, especially in Mozilla Firefox. They allow users to dynamically monitor changes to their favorite news source. Instead of treating RSS-feeds as HTML pages like most news aggregators, they are treated as bookmarks that are updated in real-time with links to the appropriate sources. Live bookmarks are updated automatically; but there is no browser option to prevent or control updates for the Automatic Live Signature.
