Plot
When the movie begins, Los Angeles lawyer Victor Santini (Franciosa) is employed to defend Josephine "Jo" Morris (Hayworth), who is accused of conspiring with Larry Ellis (Young) to kill her husband Mike Morris (Ryder), a policeman. detective. In a flashback, it was shown that his marriage to Morris was loveless and boring. He meets Ellis a widower, with whom he finds friendship and comfort. The two meet each other regularly, and very intimate. Mother Larry (Dunnock), a good and controlling mother, knows about their relationship. She threatens to expose Jo to her husband unless he stops. Jo tells Larry what has happened, and Larry travels to see it and comforts her.
Believing her husband was asleep, Jo allowed Larry into his kitchen to talk. However, Mike finds them, and pulls his service revolver and struggles with Larry. It ended with Mike being shot dead. Both are charged with attempted murder, and most of the film consists of trials.
At trial, prosecutor Phil Stanley (Meisner) emphasized how Jo first told police that a thief had killed her husband, until Larry's cufflink was found at the scene. He also noted that an insurance policy was purchased a week before filming.
Santini eroded the prosecution case and included cross-examination that burned Larry's mother. Both were found not guilty and left the courtroom.
