The New Living Translation ( NLT ) is a translation of the Bible into modern English. Originally started as an attempt to revise The Living Bible, the project evolved into a new English translation of the Hebrew and Greek texts. Some stylistic influences from The Living Bible remain in the first edition (1996), but this is less clear in the second and third editions (2004, 2007). In March 2014, the Christian Booksellers Association ranked NLT as the second most popular English-language version of the Bible based on unit sales.

Translation philosophy
The New Living Translation uses translators of various denominations. This method combines attempts to translate the original text in a simple and literal manner with a dynamic equivalence synergy approach used to convey the thinking behind the text in which the literal translation may be elusive or even misleading to the modern reader. Part of the reasoning behind adapting language for accessibility is the premise that more people will hear the Bible read aloud in church services than perhaps read it or study it on their own.
It has been suggested that this "thinking-for-thinking" methodology, while making translations easier to understand, is less accurate than the literal (formal equivalence) method, and thus the New Life Translation may not be suitable for those who want to do a detailed study of the Bible.

Textual base
The translation of the Old Testament is based on the Masoretic Text (Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia) and is further compared to other sources such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Septuagint, Greek manuscripts, the Samaritan Pentateuch, the Syriac Peshitta, and the Latin Vulgate. The New Testament translation is based on two editions of the Greek New Testament standard (UBS 4th edition of revision and edition of Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece 27th).
Translation history
Work on this revision began in 1989 with ninety translators and published in July 1996; 25 years after the publication of The Living Bible. The reader of advanced readership of the Book of Romans was originally printed as the New Life Version, but was eventually changed to New Living Translation to avoid confusion between this new work and The Living Bible. NLV is still used to identify New Living Translation in ONIX for Books. Soon after, a new revision began and the Second Edition of NLT (also called NLTse ) was released in 2004. The revision in 2007 consisted mostly of minor changes to text or footnotes. Other revisions were released in 2013 and 2015 with minor changes throughout.
In 2016, Tyndale House Publishers, the Conference of the Catholic Bishops' Commission of India for the Bible, ATC Publisher Bengaluru, and twelve Bible scholars collaborated to prepare the New Life Bible Edition.
Property translation
The New Life translation (according to the publisher) is intended to be readily accessible to modern English readers. As part of this effort:
- Weight and size, money, date and time etc. described in modern terms, with footnotes giving a literal translation, for example John 6: 7 states Philip replied, "Even if we work for months, we will not have enough money to feed them"
- Some phrases are translated into contemporary English; for example "they beat their breasts" (Luke 23:48) translated "They come home in deep sorrow", again with footnotes giving a more literal interpretation.
- The gender inclusive language is used where the editor believes it is appropriate, so ??????? ( adelphoi ) is translated "brothers and sisters".

with the note that the Greek text reads "Two hundred denarii will not be enough" and the explanation that a denarius equals a full day's wages of a worker.
Circulation
In July 2008, NLT earned the number 1 spot in unit sales, releasing the NIV for the first time in more than two decades. According to the Christian Booksellers Association (as of March 2014), NLT is the second most popular Bible translation based on unit sales, and the fourth most popular based on sales figures.
A Roman Catholic edition of NLT with Deuterocanon has been published by ATC Publications in Bangalore, India. The NLT Catholic Edition (NLTCE) has been imprimaturally awarded by Oswald Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay and President of the Catholic Bishops' Council of India. Imprimatur does not extend the use of NLTCE in the liturgy, but has been formally approved by the Roman Catholic Church for private study.
NLT is available in various editions as well as numerous editions of the Bible studied, including: The Life Application Study Bible The Life Recovery Bible , The NLT Study Bible , and NLT Illustrated Study Bible . The Cornerstone Biblical Commentary series uses the second edition of NLT text as its base. In June 2017, the African Study Bible was offered to African African readers edited by Dean of the International African University, John Jusu.
