breadcrumb or breadcrumb trail is a graphical control element that is often used as a navigation aid in the user interface and on web pages. This allows users to track and maintain awareness of their location in programs, documents, or websites.
The term is derived from the trail of bread crumbs left by Hansel and Gretel in a fairy tale of the same name.

Usage
The breadcrumb trail tracks and displays every page viewed by website visitors, either in the order of pages viewed, or in other definitions, displaying the current page hierarchy in relation to the structure of the website. Breadcrumbs are usually placed in horizontal shape under masthead or website navigation.
Website
Breadcrumbs usually appear horizontally at the top of Web pages, often under a title bar or header. They provide a link back to any previous page that the user navigates to get to the current page or - in the hierarchical site structure - the parent page of the current one. Breadcrumbs provides a trail for users to follow back to their starting point or entry. Signs larger than (& gt;) often serve as a hierarchy separator, although designers may use other flying machines (such as or à »), as well as various graphic icons.
Breadcrumb traces or paths based on the viewing history are usually given as follows:
Pages viewed & gt; Page viewed & gt; Page viewed & gt; Page viewed & gt; The current page is being viewed
For example, in this scenario, website visitors see seven pages (note how the page is being tracked for users to see it):
Home page & gt; Service & gt; About Us & gt; Home page & gt; Last Newsletter & gt; Home page & gt; The current page is being viewed
A typical Breadcrumb following a hierarchical structure is shown as follows:
Home page & gt; Pages page & gt; Sub-section page
Software
The current file manager includes Windows Explorer (from Windows Vista and beyond), Finder (for Macintosh operating system), Nautilus GNOME, KDE Dolphin, Xfce's Thunar, MATE's Caja, and SnowBird enable breadcrumb navigation, often replacing or expanding the address bar.

Type
There are three types of breadcrumb Web:
- Location : the location's breadcrumbs are static and show where the page is located in the website hierarchy.
- Attributes : the breadcrumbs attribute provides information that categorizes the current page.
- Path : the breadcrumb path indicates to the user the steps they took end up on the current page.
Usability
Breadcrumb location is not always appropriate for sites with very rich content so that a single category does not fully describe a particular piece of content. For this reason, tags may be more appropriate, although breadcrumbs can still be used to allow users to retrace their steps and see how they got to the current page.
Other names
Some commentators and programmers use the term "cookie crumb" as a synonym for describing the navigation design This should not be confused with the term cookie , which refers to an HTTP cookie (a website text file writes on a visitor machine that records data such as login information).
Virtual Learning Collaboration Michigan Community College uses the term "Navigation Path", as do some Drupal users.
French and Spanish speakers sometimes use the term Ariadne's thread in French with Ariadne's abandoned thread to Theseus so that he can find the exit from labyrinth after killing the Minotaur, on LIFO (stack) instead of FIFO (queue).
