History

William Monroe High School serves as the only public high school in Greene County. The name of the school, William Monroe, immigrated to this area of ​​England in 1749. His will as long as the flowers of his land were used for free education of white youth. When Greene County was formed from Orange County in 1838, the Greene Humane Society was established to manage the portion of the funds allocated to the area.

William Monroe High School opened in 1925 as a one-story building with eight classrooms that surround the auditorium. In 1934, two additional classrooms were built at the rear of the building. Four high school classrooms were used for elementary students until William Monroe Elementary School was opened during the 1954-1955 school year.

In accordance with the will of Greene County voters in 1961, a William Monroe High School was opened in 1962. The building contains 15 classrooms with two parallel wings, a gym/auditorium/cafeteria, and an office for guidance and administration. The addition of 4 classrooms and libraries was built in 1970, and in 1982 added a cafeteria that provided seating for 200 students. The following year, 1983, the school expanded to include a new gym with a seating capacity of 1200, a coach office, and additional classrooms. In 1986, renovations took place at the Greene County Technical Education Center, which elevated it into a contemporary, contemporary building.

Renovations and further additions to the main building were completed in January 1987. The expansion included a modern auditorium, a dressing room featuring music classes, two computer labs, five classrooms and a teacher's office, bringing the total number of classes to 33.

In the fall of 1992, William Monroe Secondary School opened on the renovated William Monroe site. The eighth graders were transferred to William Monroe Secondary School to provide the current 9-12 high school configuration.

In the summer of 1995, old building parts had been renovated and nine new classrooms and a large workspace were added to create a new Science Wing. Since then, there are eleven classrooms (mobile units) added adjacent to the Math/Science Wing.

The alternative education program began on March 1, 2000. It took place in Trailer 13. In 2001, with the approval of the School Board, the program was developed into a charter school called New Directions Academy. The physical facility is double the size and has a full time director, three teachers and two secretary assistants. New Directions Academy continues to serve students from high school to high school, but is no longer a charter school.

A building addition was approved in the spring of 2005 and 18 new wing spaces that run parallel to the wings of Mathematics/Science opened in late 2006.
