Virginia Information Technologies Agency (VITA) is the executive department that provides information technology services to other Virginia state institutions. It is headed by the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Virginia.
VITA is a designated information technology service provider (IT) for government agencies and public bodies including local government entities and higher education.
VITA provides computing and telecommunications services, which are grouped as 'special infrastructure services' and 'integrated infrastructure services'. 'Custom' services include individualized computing services required to process customer applications. The 'package' service includes hardware, software, maintenance and support. The value VITA charges to its clients is posted on its website and approved by the Audit Commission and the Joint Legislative Review Commission. In many cases, VITA charges the same tariff to the executive branch institutions and other government entities.
At the 2010 General Assembly session, Governor Bob McDonnell proposed legislation (SB 236), which was passed on 11 March 2010, to request a Virginia Information Technology Board report to the Executive Branch rather than an independent board. The law abolished the Information Technology Investment Board (ITIB) and replaced it with the new Information Technology Advisory Board. Under the new arrangement, the Governor appoints the CIO, which reports to the Virginia Tech Secretary.
