Employment Number is a verification of the user's job database created by TALX Corporation. TALX was acquired by Equifax Inc. in February 2007.
The Employment Number allows applicants to receive immediate confirmation of employment and individual salary for verification purposes. The fee for this information is revealed only after the applicant answers some personal questions.
It is used by more than 50,000 organizations to verify employment data.
Some organizations that use the Employment Number include Fannie Mae, Hilton Hotel, Rent-A-Center, United States Postal Service, Domino Pizza, University of Pennsylvania, and Missouri University System. Established in 1995, The Work Number has over 225 million job records.
The Employment Number is an example of outsourcing the functions of the Human Resources department.
In addition, the implementation of the Employment Number caused a change in the financial responsibility for job verification. In a typical organization, the cost of job verification is borne entirely by the employer and the actual service costs absorbed into the human resources department's budget. In organizations that use a Job Number, the costs are borne by the verification applicant, who purchases either a single verification or a dual verification package from TALX.

Data terkumpul
The Employment Number collects weekly salary information, which is up to date as the last payment period and may return many years. It also collects old jobs, titles, "location information", and "other types of information related to human resources, such as healthcare providers, whether a person has dental insurance and if they ever filed a jobless claim."

Benefits
Cost savings
This service reduces the amount of time it takes for the Human Resources department to respond to job verification requests. If the Human Resources department manages a large number of employees, such as universities, seasonal companies, etc., The amount of time savings and cost savings can be huge.
Access control
Employees of companies or organizations using the Employment Service number receive accounts prepared for them on the website. Currently, and possibly, a former employee may enter the Employment Number at any time.
Employees can not control access to their records by any entity or person who knows their social security number.
If an employee wants a petitioner to view their pay history, the employee logs on and receives the 6-digit code, which he gives the applicant. Without a specific 6-digit code, applicants are not allowed to view employee salaries.
Equifax advertises and sells some data to third parties. Companies including "mortgage lender, auto, and other financial services" can request payment-level information similar to credit reports. Also, "debt agency/billing can request job information" to verify one's workplace.
Instant availability of records
In addition, as soon as the applicant receives permission from the applicant to access the records, and the fees paid (if required), it is immediately available.
Objective properties of recording
The system reports factual information only, such as length of employment and occupation. Some entrepreneurs feel this reduces the risk of legal liability for the subjective content of personal references.
Similarly, if an employee is worried that the supervisor may share information that is unprofitable or unwilling to verify the work, the Employment Number provides some protection from this, since the system reports only objective data. This does not include performance reviews.
Additional HR services
The Employment Number, if prepared for this service by the company, may provide a duplicate copy of the W-2 form through the employee's online portal.
Redemption of social service fees
The Employment Number generally charges a fee for verification data. However, fees are waived for the Federal, State, or District Department of Social Services, which provide benefits such as the Food Stamp or TANF program for their low-income/welfare applicants. Reports are sent by fax and may take several days to send. Certain accelerated services or advanced services may have additional costs.
To be eligible for reduced or waived fees, agencies must register with a Working Number using an official fax number. Institutions that can benefit from this service include feasibility programs, public housing, enforcement of child support, and other public assistance needs. "Batch services" for multiple requests are also available.
Criticism
2013 sale of sensitive personal information
In January 2013, the Employment Number was criticized for selling access to the personal data of the protested persons, particularly the salary data, to third parties, without the consent of the subject. Affected organizations include Columbia University, and third parties including debt collection companies.
Policy and advocacy director at Privacy Rights Clearinghouse stated, "I think [this] is something that will offend many people. One usually considers the salary information to be shared by your employer only with the IRS."
2017 exposure to American payroll
On October 8, 2017, Brian Krebs reported that The Work Number describes the history of salaries for employees of tens of thousands of US companies to anyone with a Social Security number and employee's date of birth. For about half the US population, the last two pieces of data are known to have criminals, following Equifax's security breach May-July 2017.
Identity theft worries
Recently, internet security issues on sites containing "sensitive" information have become big business for hackers. Questions regarding the security of various websites offering services (such as Employment Number) containing this information may be compromised by the hacker (and possibly the future target for hackers) and issues for the internet security officer. Call centers are located in Costa Rica and require the Social Security Number to add more risks to identity theft.
Profit motive
The Employment Number shall charge to the requesting party for any Employment Verification. Applicants may choose a "pay per usage" package or may choose a package that includes a certain number of verifications per month.
Since a fee (up to $ 45.95 per verification) is required, this increases the financial cost of verifying someone's work. There is a risk this fee may be passed on to the applicant.
Mandatory use policy
Some organizations make use of the Mandatory Employment Number as the only way for employees or testers to receive information about staff work. This limits the availability of personal, subjective, or qualitative references. It also requires a fee to be paid whenever verification is required.
Inaccurate or outdated information
Some consumers complain to Privacy Rights Clearinghouse that "the data in its database is inaccurate," or that "when they try to use information for employment verification, their titles have expired or misrepresented their work history."
