The Western Australian Shipping Service is the state government's transport agency established in 1912, in Western Australia, primarily to serve ports in northwestern Australia.

Originally named the State Steam Ship Service, it was renamed as the State Shipping Service in 1919, and again in 1979 as State.

Histori

On May 4, 1912, the State Steamship Service was established by the Scad government and in response to requests for service improvements along the coast of Northern Australia after the Adelaide Steamboat Company withdrew its services. It was controlled by the Fremantle Harbor Trust between 1913 and 1918. In January 1919 it was renamed the State Shipping Service (SSS).

In November 1965, the SSS was under the responsibility of the newly established West Coast Coastal Shipping Commission. In January 1979, the service was renamed State.

In June 1995, the government announced that the States would halt operations, with the remaining three ships being sold. The government subsidizes privately operated services from Fremantle to Port Hedland, Broome and Wyndham until it stops in 2013.

The Western Australia Coastal Shipping Commission, managed by the Department of Transport, continues to handle ongoing ex-employee compensation claims.

The former service office in Fremantle is now used by the Spare Parts Theater, and the various artifacts of this service are housed in the Fremantle Maritime Museum.

Operation

The service initially provided transportation for passengers, goods and stock, with passenger service ceases in 1973.

Having previously operated exclusively between the ports of Western Australia and the Northern Territory, in 1964 SSS began operating irregular services that surrounded Australia in a clockwise direction in six weeks. The first voyage left Fremantle on March 11, 1964, phoned in Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. This service ceased in July 1969 with Kangaroo, Koojara and Koolama II collectively operating 18 voyages.
