Smallpdf (GmbH) is an online software company specializing in Portable Document Format (PDF) and other digital document tools available on request through the cloud. The Smallpdf toolbox offers PDF compression, PDF conversion from/to MS Office format, as well as rotate, share, merge, unlock and protect features for PDF files in 17 languages.
Smallpdf is the first project to be established under the company name Immaterial (GmbH) in 2013. Immaterial changed its name to Smallpdf (September 20, 2016). Company headquarters are in Zurich.

History
Smallpdf was founded in October 2013 by three friends (Mathis Buchi, Lino Teuterberg and Manuel Stofer) from Switzerland who got the idea to develop PDF compression tools when they encountered the challenge of receiving important documents from home on the move. Using their collective skills in coding, design, business and marketing, the founders released basic tools that compressed PDF files in October 2013. Since 2013, the company has introduced 14 digital document tools.
The company has bootstrap since its inception, relying on the initial investment of the founders, donations from users and advertising sales to fund the development of available tools.
The company also generates revenue through the sale of third-party software.
In April 2016, Smallpdf released premium services at a cost of $ 6 per month or $ 48 per year.

Since its founding in 2013, Smallpdf has been fully self-financed. The founders developed the idea for the project after having difficulty sending and receiving important documents while traveling abroad.

Smallpdf Partners with Solid Documents for PDF to Office libraries, as well as with PDF tools. Solid Documents is a New Zealand based company offering desktop PDF solutions.

In 2014, Smallpdf released a function that allows users to send PDF files to be printed and sent by post to the intended recipients but they must be stopped because the service request is too low.
