An op-ed (initially short for " as opposed to editorial pages " though often considered "opinion opinion editor ") is a written prose section typically published by mail news or magazines expressing the opinion of a named author is usually not affiliated with the editorial board of publications. Op-eds differ from the two editorials (opinion cuts filed by editorial board members) and letters to the editor (opinion cuts sent by readers).

Origin

The direct ancestor to the pages of modern opinion was created in 1921 by Herbert Bayard Swope of The New York Evening World. When Swope took over as editor in 1920, he realized that the opposite page with the editorial was "prosecution for book reviews, community empowerment, and obituaries". He is quoted as writing:

It struck me that there was nothing more interesting than an opinion when opinion was interesting, so I designed a method of cleaning up the opposite editorial page, which became the most important in America... and there I decided to print an opinion, ignoring the facts.

But Swope only included the opinions of his newspaper employees, leaving the "modern" page to be developed in 1970 under the direction of John B. Oakes' The New York Times editor. The first page of op-ed from The New York Times appeared on Sept. 21, 1970. Writing media scholar Michael Socolow from Oakes innovation: "The Times effort synthesizes editorial and editorial ambitions.Journalistic innovation is usually complex, and usually involves various external factors. The Times op-ed page emerged in an era of democratization of cultural and political discourse and economic pressure for the company itself. The newspaper executives developed a place for outside contributors with the space provided for sale at a premium rate for additional comments and other purposes. Competition from radio and television

Beginning in the 1930s, radio began to threaten print journalism, a process that was later accelerated by the advent of television. To combat this, major newspapers such as The New York Times and The Washington Post began incorporating more subjective and polite journalism, adding more columns and growing their op-ed pages.

Possible conflicts of interest

Concerns about how to clearly disclose relationships in op-ed arise because media readers can not be expected to know all about possible relationships between op-eds, editors and interest groups that fund some of them. In a letter to The New York Times, the lack of a clear statement of a conflict of interest in open opinion was criticized by a group of US journalists who campaigned for more "open transparency".
