Certification and referrals
Locksmiths do not come under the Security Industry Authority, and there is no government license for locksmiths. This means that anyone can trade as a locksmith regardless of background, motive or competence. In 2009 it became possible to get background checks on locksmiths (except full-time work by schools/hospitals etc.). This occurred when the Exception for Rehabilitation Act Offenders Act 1974 was amended in July 2009 after debates in the House of Commons and the House of Lords where MLA was added to the list which made it possible to obtain standard level CRB disclosure.
MLA has its own non-government certification process in which companies are inspected and regularly checked. There are currently about 350 Approved Companies, which can be found through the "Discover Locksmith" website reference program.
