On the web, interstitial is the webpage displayed before or after the expected content page, often to show ads or confirm the age of the user (before displaying age-restricted content). Most interstitial ads are delivered by the ad server.
Some people are concerned about using the page to serve online ads before allowing users to see the content they are trying to access.

Interstitial meaning
In this context, interstitials are used in the sense of "between". An interstitial web page is between the reference page and the referring page - hence between two pages. This differs from pages that only link directly to other pages, because the interstitial page only serves to provide additional information to users during the course of navigating from one page to the next.
In digital marketing, the term "interstitial" is often used in the sense of "interstitial ads", not "interstitial web pages". In some cases, this can cause confusion because interstitial ads are not always served on interstitial webpages. According to the standards proposed by the IAB, interstitials (also known as advertisements between pages) may appear on separate web pages, or appear briefly as overlays on the target page. In addition, mobile advertising guidelines created by the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) include in-app interstitial ads, integrated into the app, not web pages.
In 2015, Google representatives declared that they wanted to render the negative ratings factor interstitials in Google Search.
