Technology industry review
HubSpot has been described as unique because it strives to provide customers with an all-in-one approach. Review of 2012 in Search CRM says HubSpot is not the best business solution in every category but taken as a whole it is the best "marketing solution" that incorporates many tools into one package. It identifies HubSpot's "power" as the sophistication of the Call-to-Action (CTA) tool, the online ecosystem, and "ease of use." The weakness is described as having "wider than depth." The review said the lack of customization and design tools could be limiting and that it is missing out on advanced features like Business Management tool (BPM) to manage workflow.
Controversy
In July 2015, CMO Hubspot Mike Volpe was dismissed for violating HubSpot's business behavior code after it was found that he was trying to get a copy of the "Disrupted: My Misunderstanding in a Bubble Start Up book written by his former employee Daniel Lyons. According to an article in the Boston Globe, records obtained under the Freedom of Information Act indicate that HubSpot executives consider the book "financial threat to HubSpot" and Volpe uses "tactics such as hacking email and blackmail" in an attempt to prevent the book was published.
In April 2016, after releasing his book, Lyons criticized the company in the New York Times article saying it had a "frat house" atmosphere and described it as a "digital sweatshop", claiming there was little work security for workers technology at HubSpot. Later that month, the founder of HubSpot gave an official response to the book, where they discussed some, but not all, Lyons claims.
