Plot

During another summer with Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon, Harry Potter and Dudley are attacked by Dementors. After using magic to save Dudley and himself, Harry was expelled from Hogwarts, but the decision was later canceled after a trial at the Ministry of Magic. Harry was brought in by a group of magicians (including the original Mad-Eye Moody, Professor Lupine, and several new faces, including Nymphadora Tonks, a merry young magician who was a Metamorphmagus [a magician who can change his appearance without a potion or spell], and Kingsley Shacklebolt , a senior Auror with egalitarian views) to No. 12, Grimmauld Place, the childhood home of his godfather, Sirius Black. It also served as the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, where Mr. and Mrs. Weasley and Sirius were also members. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger explain that the Order of the Phoenix is a secret organization led by Hogwarts principal, Albus Dumbledore, dedicated to fighting Lord Voldemort and his followers, Death Eaters. From members of the Order, Harry and others knew that Voldemort was looking for an object he did not have before his first defeat, and considered this object to be some kind of weapon. Harry knows that the Ministry of Magic, led by Cornelius Fudge, refuses to recognize Voldemort's return due to the panic and chaos that will cause it, and has run a dirty campaign against him and Dumbledore.

At Hogwarts, Harry learns that Dolores Umbridge, a senior employee of the Ministry of Magic, will become the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Umbridge and Harry clash, because he, like Fudge, refuses to believe that Voldemort has returned. He punished Harry for his rebellious outburst by telling him to write "I should not lie" with a curse pen that carved the phrase onto his skin. He also refuses to teach his students how to perform a defense spell, prompting Harry, Ron and Hermione to form their own Defense Against Dark Arts group (with students from Gryffindor, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff), whom they call Dumbledore's Army. Many students signed up, including Neville Longbottom, Fred and George Weasley, Ginny Weasley, and Luna Lovegood. Struggling for a place to practice, Dobby the house elf told him about the Room of Requirement and its use. The clubs meet there to learn and practice a defensive spell under Harry's instructions.

Meanwhile, Rubeus Hagrid has not returned from the secret mission given to him by Dumbledore at the end of his previous book, and is absent for the first part of the school year. Upon his return, Harry, Ron, and Hermione know that his mission, which is largely unsuccessful, is to search for the last giant to stop them from joining Lord Voldemort. Professor Umbridge has been constantly collecting more power and influence in school, and when she begins to regularly check Hagrid's lessons on the Care of Magical Creatures, it is clear that she intends to get rid of her.

One night, Harry has a vision through the eyes of Voldemort's snake, Nagini, owned by Voldemort, attacking Ron's father, Arthur Weasley. Harry tells Professor McGonagall and Dumbledore, and Mr. Weasley is saved. Dumbledore arranges for Harry to take Occlumency lessons with Professor Snape to protect his mind against Voldemort's further invasion.

Umbridge finally sacked Professor Trelawney, the teacher of Divination; However, he was angry when Professor Dumbledore undermined his power by letting Trelawney resume school, and hired Firenze, a centaur, to succeed him, despite Umbridge's prejudice against some humans. Soon afterwards, Umbridge was given clues about Dumbledore Army by Marietta Edgecombe, who in doing so unintentionally activates the curse made by Hermione that ruined her face. Despite Dobby's warning, the gang was caught and got into trouble with Fudge. When Dumbledore was responsible for the illegal organization, he was forced to leave school and hide. Dolores Umbridge became headmaster, and Fred and George caused chaos around the school in revenge.

During an Occlumency lesson, Snape is summoned and Harry, left alone, sees Snape's Pensieve, seeing memory in time as a pupil at Hogwarts. Harry is shocked to see his father, James Potter, and Sirius bluff and humiliate Snape. Snape caught Harry and, furious, refused to continue his studies. Confused at his father's character statement, Harry talks with Sirius and Lupine using Floo powder through a fireplace in Umbridge's own office and learns more about his parents and their background. After helping Harry barge into Umbridge's office, Fred and George then leave Hogwarts to start a joke shop in Diagon Alley.

Suspicious that he would become the next teacher to be fired by Umbridge, Hagrid confessed to Harry, Ron, and Hermione that he had brought his half-brother Grawp to Hogwarts and hid it in the Forbidden Forest, intent on finally introducing him to human society. Hagrid asks the three of them to take care of Grawp if he himself has to leave school. Sure enough, Umbridge led the feast of the Aurors to attack Hagrid at his home one night. Hagrid defeated them and escaped from school; McGonagall, trying to harass violence, was badly injured and put into St. Hospital. Mungo.

On the last day of O.W.L. test, Harry has a vision of Sirius tortured by Voldemort in the Department of Mysteries. He tried again to illegally use Umbridge's office fireplace to communicate with the Order of the Phoenix headquarters to make sure the sight was genuine, and was told by Kreacher that the house elf was right in the Ministry, before Umbridge arrested Harry and his friends. in action. Snape is summoned to give Veritaserum to question Harry, but he claims to have no further stock of the remaining potion. Given that Snape was also a member of the Order of the Phoenix, Harry gave him a vague warning about the fate of Sirius, but Snape claims to have not understood it.

Umbridge decides to use an illegal Cruciatus Curse on Harry to interrogate him about Sirius's whereabouts. He also revealed that he himself ordered a Dementor attack on him, intending to make him silenced or discredited. Hermione intervened and to create a diversion, assuring Umbridge that they were hiding Dumbledore's weapons in the Forbidden Forest. Harry and Hermione lead him to a forest area inhabited by a centaur, where Umbridge provokes them to take his prisoner. The centaurs are furious when he learns that Hermione uses them to bid and turn the couple on, but Grawp arrives and clasps with the centaurs, allowing Harry and Hermione to flee.

Luna, Ron, Ginny, and Neville joined them in the forest and all six flew to the Ministry on the thestrals, hoping to find and rescue Sirius. Once in the Department of Mysteries, Harry realized that his vision was vilified by Voldemort; However, he found a glass ball that bears the names of the Dark Lord. Death Eaters led by Lucius Malfoy strike to catch the ball, which is a recording of prophecy about Harry and Lord Voldemort, revealed as an object that Voldemort has been trying to get throughout the year, the Dark Lord believes that there was something he missed when he first heard the prophecy. Lucius explains that only the subject of the prophecy, in this case Harry or Voldemort, can safely move it from the shelf. During a hot battle, Neville accidentally kicked and destroyed the prophecy. Harry and his friends, soon joining the Order, enter the battle with Death Eaters, where Bellatrix Lestrange kills Sirius and Voldemort himself arrives to kill Harry, but Dumbledore rescues him and climaxes his fight against the Dark Lord towards a dead end. In the midst of the duel, Voldemort fails to try to have Harry in an attempt to get Dumbledore to kill the boy, then run away as Cornelius Fudge appears, finally facing the first-hand evidence that Voldemort has actually returned.

In his office, Dumbledore explains that Snape has understood Harry's cryptic warning, and then contacts Sirius, knowing that he is still in Grimmauld Place. After Harry fails to return from the Forbidden Forest, Snape deduces where he went and warned the Order of the Phoenix, allowing them to rescue Harry and his friends. It was revealed that during the Christmas holidays, Kreacher had interpreted Sirius's orders as an order to leave home, and went to Narcissa Malfoy, Lucius's wife, and told them about Harry and Sirius's close relationship; Voldemort then realizes that he can lure Harry into the Department of Mysteries by tricking him into thinking that Sirius is in danger there.

Dumbledore then explains the prophecy: Before Harry was born, Professor Trelawney predicted that a boy with the power to defeat Voldemort would be born, would be marked as equal by Voldemort and possess an unknown power, and that one of the couples had to kill another, can not live while others survive ". Voldemort learns from the first part of the prophecy, and then tries to kill Harry in the belief that he can prevent it from becoming reality, unaware that he will give Harry power by doing so. Dumbledore told Harry that he had to stay with the Dursleys for a summer last time because by bringing Harry to his house, Aunt Petunia, Lily's sister, sealing the protection Harry's mother gave him when he died; as long as he is there, he is safe from Voldemort and his followers.

Harry comes to terms with prophetic responsibility, but mourns the loss of his godfather. Luna comforts her, tells about her and her father's faith in heaven. Harry then finds an old hand-held mirror in his dorm which is a gift from Sirius. He realizes that Sirius does not want him depressed on this issue, and decides to keep fighting against Voldemort.
