Exynos is an ARM based circuit (reduced instruction set) System-on-Chips (SoCs) developed and manufactured by Samsung Electronics and is a continuation of previous Samsung S3C, S5L and S5P from SoCs.

History

In 2010, Samsung launched the S5PC110 (now Exynos 3 Single) on its Samsung Galaxy S phone, featuring a licensed ARM Cortex-A8 CPU.

In early 2011, Samsung first launched the Exynos 4210 SoC on its Samsung Galaxy S II smart phone. The driver code for Exynos 4210 is made available in the Linux kernel and support is added in version 3.2 in November 2011.

On September 29, 2011, Samsung introduced the Exynos 4212 as the successor to the 4210; it has a higher clock frequency and a "50 percent higher 3D graphics performance than previous generations of processors". Built with 32- nm- height? metal gate (HKMG) low power process; promising "power levels 30 percent lower than previous generations of processes".

On November 30, 2011, Samsung released information about their upcoming SoC with dual-core ARM Cortex-A15 CPU, originally named "Exynos 5250" and later renamed Exynos 5 Dual. The SoC has a memory interface that provides 12.8 GB/s of memory bandwidth, support for USB 3.0 and SATA 3, can decode full 1080p video at 60 fps along with simultaneously displaying WQXGA-resolution (2560 ÃƒÆ'-1600) on screen phone as well as 1080p via HDMI. Samsung Exynos 5 Dual has been used in prototype supercomputer 2015, while the final product will use chips intended for servers from other vendors.

On April 26, 2012, Samsung released Exynos 4 Quad, which drives the Samsung Galaxy S III and Samsung Galaxy Note II. Exynos 4 Quad SoC uses 20% less power than SoC in Samsung Galaxy S II. Samsung also renamed some SoCs, Exynos 3110 to Exynos 3 Single, Exynos 4210 and 4212 to Exynos 4 Dual 45 nm, and Exynos 4 Dual 32 nm and Exynos 5250 to Exynos 5 Dual.
