The European Medical Writers Association ( EMWA ) was founded in 1992 in Brussels, Belgium, as a professional organization for European medical writers, both freelancers or in-house employers, pharmaceutical company or medical communication company. Between 1992 and 1998, EMWA was the European chapter of the American Medical Writers Association.

The goal of EMWA is to provide a forum to promote standards of excellence in medical writing by advancing member professional development and raising awareness of medical writing across Europe.

EMWA now has over 800 members from 27 countries, and includes academics and home or freelance professionals for pharmaceutical and medical communication companies, research institutes and in the field of scientific journalism. EMWA has an extensive professional development program, and organizes workshops and other educational and social events at biennial conferences, one in Spring and the other in Autumn, both in European locations. EMWA also publishes the journal, The Write Stuff , four times a year. In 2012, the journal changed its name to Medical Writing and began publishing by Maney Publishing. Since early 2016, this journal is now once again self-published and printed by Hastings; feature article now is open access.

The strategic goal of EMWA is to build a medical writing profession, to expand its membership base, to streamline and improve organizational structure and processes and to provide a forum for its members where they can share their expertise.
