about is an internal URI scheme (also known as a "URL scheme" or, incorrectly, "protocol") applied to various Web browsers to reveal internal functions and built-in functions. This is an official IANA registered scheme, and standardized.
In earlier versions of Netscape, any URIs that begin about: are not recognized as the default command will only generate text after a colon is displayed. Similarly, in earlier versions of Internet Explorer, about: was followed by an HTML string (eg about: & lt; em & gt; hello world & lt;/em & gt; ) will render the string as if it were the source of the page - thus providing a similar (though more limited) facility to the data: URI scheme defined by RFC 2397. Still another version of Netscape will return various phrases in response to the < unknown about URI, including "Whatchew talkin '' bout, Willis?" (catch phrase from TV show Diff'rent Strokes ) or "Homey does not play dat!" (From the recurring comedy on TV show In Living Color ).
The most frequently implemented URI is about: blank , which shows a blank HTML document, and only about: , which can display information about the browser. Some browsers use URIs that begin with a browser name for similar purposes, and much about URIs will be translated to the corresponding URI if it is entered. Examples are opera (Opera) or chrome (Google Chrome). The exception is about: blank , which is not translated.

In 2010, and beyond, there was an attempt to standardize the scheme of URI , and specify the processing requirements for certain URIs, in the IETF Application Area (APPSAWG) Working Group. In August 2012, published as an Official Request to Comment as RFC 6694. The UGs on which has since been established and defined by IANA is listed below.

Many of these can also be used in Thunderbird, by setting them as "Email Start Page". Also, some extensions specify an additional about: URIs are not listed here.
Opera (Presto) -specially about: URI
about is an alias for opera; therefore all these URIs also work with the prefix. User JavaScript is disabled for all URIs in the surrounding URI or opera scheme as a security feature. However, these pages can be styled using local stylesheets.
None of these functions, except opera: about combinations, works on Nintendo DS versions of Opera browser, Nintendo DS Browser.
Internet Explorer-specific about: URI
Internet Explorer about URIs can be configured in Windows. It is therefore possible that some of the registered URIs will not work on certain computers. For example, "about: mozilla" has been removed in SP2 (although the page can still be found in "res://mshtml.dll/about.moz"). It's about URIs sometimes used for spyware and adware, especially in CoolWebSearch, which is made about: display ads are empty.

Netscape (historical)
About: URLs originated and already existed in all versions of Netscape browsers. It was originally added as Easter eggs to display information about the development team.
The old Netscape browser has about: people URIs similar to about: credits above, but will be redirected to Netscape's active employee list. Additionally, about: username , where username is the username of the Netscape employee, will be redirected to the Netscape site from the specified employee. For example, about: jwz will be redirected to http://people.netscape.com/jwz/ (not the active link). Not all employee pages are accessible through this scheme. Only developers who know which files in the source tree and the coding schemes used to obfuscate an employee's directory of entries can add their names.
Many more about: Easter eggs exist, including the famous ones about: mozilla, and other lesser-known ones showing Mozilla Netscape mascot images in various foreign outfits, such as about: deutsch that shows Mozilla in Lederhosen.

Also, although about: blank is supported, anything else (including about: about) typed after about: will show the text as a web page in the browser.
